From Client to Volunteer

Anna is a social work student who has been volunteering with Any Baby Can for a while and in a variety of positions. All of our volunteers are committed to supporting parents and children in our area, and they help out in lots of ways that make our clients’ experiences extra special. But for Anna, being a volunteer with Any Baby Can hits closer to home.
When Anna was pregnant with her son, she and her mom found Any Baby Can’s Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) program. She was connected with a nurse who supported her through pregnancy and her son’s first two years. Through Any Baby Can, she also received counseling with No Estás Solo and her son benefited from speech therapy through our Early Childhood Intervention services. In fact, it was from these experiences that she decided she wanted to be a therapist and entered the social work program. After graduating NFP, she made a plan for her future and went back to school.

“I really love doing that because I was able to do it with my son and put a lot of love into it. And know that a family is going to appreciate all the effort, just like we did when we were clients,” reflects Anna.
One of her favorite memories is helping with Adopt-a-Family. She signed up to volunteer and was even able to lead other volunteers in the process. Anna got into the holiday spirit by dressing up as Santa Claus to offer extra fun and flair to the donors and families. Anna loved being around the kids, helping them out and talking to families.
“Volunteering opened my eyes a lot! I told my instructor, I’m more open to working in nonprofit and other social services, not just direct therapy. I really enjoy it,” says Anna.
