Volunteer Helps Young Mom Graduate

While everyone had to adapt to a new way of life over the last few months, high school seniors missed out on so much: time with friends, school events and graduation. Nayeli is one of those young women. She joined Any Baby Can’s Tandem program last summer while pregnant. When Austin went into lockdown in mid-March, she was getting ready to finish her last semester of highschool. She was also taking care of her 8-month daughter, Madani.
Nayeli is smart and driven, with hopes of graduating on time with the rest of her classmates. Although virtual learning made it harder to stay connected, she had her Any Baby Can Parent Educator by her side. In order to graduate on time, Nayeli just needed to catch up on pre-calculus. Her Parent Educator was able to secure her a tutor through Any Baby Can’s volunteer program. Nayeli was matched with Bella, who had previously volunteered for AmeriCorps and Communities In Schools Central Texas, and worked as an SAT/ACT tutor.
Bella and Nayeli met via Zoom twice each week in the months during which school was closed. They worked through lessons and homework assignments, building Nayeli’s skills and confidence in advanced math. Bella got creative with the virtual learning, using screenshare, a phone and computer to work through the problems.
"Tutoring Nayeli has been a really amazing experience. She’s a quick learner, asks great questions, and has made really impressive improvements over the last few weeks. It’s so rewarding to see her progress!" says Bella.
Nayeli was always eager to learn. Even when she had to hold a baby on her lap during the tutoring sessions, she was committed to learning. During the final week before her exam, Nayeli and Bella met almost daily, making sure she was ready.
"I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to have a tutor. Bella has helped me progress so much since we’ve started. Before Bella I was having a hard time with pre-calculus. She gave me the advantage of continuing and having a better chance of graduating by my goal time." says Nayeli.
Nayeli graduated in June, with the rest of her senior class!
