The Importance of Fathers

Father’s Day is a day where fathers—biological or otherwise—are recognized for all that they do. All too often, fathers are set aside as simply the breadwinner of the family, with only the mothers as the nurturers. However, parenting is a team effort, and mothers and fathers have complimentary roles in the household. Extensive research shows that a father’s role in nurturing a child can be just as important as a mother’s, if not more in certain areas.
Studies by the Father Involvement Research Alliance have shown that when it comes to matters of the heart, a father’s positive influence can be invaluable. The children of emotionally involved fathers show increased:
- Emotional stability and security
- Confidence in new situations
- Eagerness to explore
- Sociability as they age
- Ability in problem solving
- Achievements in high-education
- Successful careers
- Empathy and tolerance of others
A father’s impact can also differ based on whether their child is a boy or a girl. FIRA shows that girls with more emotionally involved fathers have higher self-esteem, and as teenagers are less likely to become pregnant. For boys, an involved father means less aggression, lower impulsivity, and increased self-direction.
