Pregnancy Support for Moms and Dads!

When Mohsin and Amber moved to Dallas from India in 2015, they were looking to build a new life. Amber was in dental school and Mo was supporting the two of them. They moved to Austin in 2019 for a job opportunity. Shortly after, Amber found out she was pregnant! They were thrilled, but also nervous at the prospect of raising a child so far away from their family in India. With limited income and their insurance still in transition to Austin from Dallas, they didn’t know where to turn.
Amber found Agape, a community resource for pregnant people. They recommended she reach out to Any Baby Can’s Nurse-Family Partnership program, where she and Mo were connected to a nurse. Finally, they had someone by their side!
Uncertain Times for a Young Family
Amber learned about her pregnancy while getting their Medicaid enrollment finalized. Unfortunately, a few months later she tested positive for Covid-19. It was December 2020, and things were still unknown and scary. How would the baby be affected? How would they pay for medical care with Mo’s job on hold during the pandemic?
It was in this critical moment that Any Baby Can stepped in. Mo reflects how his family felt supported immediately, and with such quality of care, from their Any Baby Can nurse Nikita.
“Until our Medicaid paperwork finalized in April, Amber had no medical support apart from Any Baby Can. But with our nurse, we felt confident that she and the baby were healthy,” says Mo.
A Dad’s Perspective
With Any Baby Can’s full-service support, Mo found that he and Amber had everything they needed. Once they were able to return to at-home visiting, Nikita included him in all the appointments. He learned how to take care of Amber and the baby. And how to plan for their new, growing family.
"We had no one. So Nikita became a sister, mom, grandma and auntie. She was everything for us! The match was so perfect—she understood our culture. She understood where Amber’s mom was coming from when she’d offer suggestions. And she worked with our schedule and helped us navigate this difficult time,” says Mo.
Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is a program that supports first-time pregnant parents during this transitional phase of life. The nurse is matched with the family through pregnancy and until the child turns two years old. This long-term relationship is a true partnership!
Prepared for Parenthood
When someone is pregnant, there are a lot of thoughts, fears and opinions. That means making decisions is hard. First-time parents often turn to their own parents, friends or their doctor for support (or the internet!). Having an NFP nurse by your side brings clarity with specially trained, unbiased support at your fingertips!
“We were hesitant to make all kind of decisions. We may have eventually figured it out—after many mistakes, I’m sure—but our nurse helped us as a couple and as a family, especially as our son got older,” reflects Mo.
But more than just helping them understand their baby, NFP helped Mo understand his wife, especially during the post-partum period.
“It’s hard to understand a lot of emotions that women go through during pregnancy and after delivery. It gave me a lot of reassurance. Nikita was always very professional. She was genuinely invested in giving us and our son a great start,” says Mo.
Mo says that his nurse was so in-tune with his family and their schedule that Amber insisted they text her after every OB appointment, otherwise she would be worried. In fact, Nikita was the first person they texted when their son was born!
Return the Kindness
Mo and Amber’s son Aizen turns four in July 2025! And he already has a little sibling. Mo says that they’ve become unofficial “parent advisors.” He and Amber feel so confident in their parenting, especially during those early years, that friends turn to them for guidance and support!
After graduating from the NFP program, they now give back to Any Baby Can in so many ways. When their son turned one, Mo donated under his name, making Aizen one of Any Baby Can’s youngest donors! Since then, Mo signs up for volunteer opportunities helping with behind-the-scenes tasks and with events.
“We loved it so much that we tell every first-time parent they should reach out to Any Baby Can!,” says Mo.
For a family navigating a new culture and the complexities of first-time parenthood without local relatives, Any Baby Can provides a path forward.
