More Than a Car Seat

We work with families in big and little ways that can have a tremendous impact on their lives. Our Home Parent Educator Amy shared a story that shows one simple example of this with a reminder for parents about car seat safety.
Common Parenting Struggles
A few weeks ago, Amy was meeting with a mom in our programs when she shared that her baby was struggling with being in a car seat. Mom had moved her from the infant seat to a convertible car seat at 9 months old, but she would cry and scream every time she was in it. If you’ve driven an infant around, you know how difficult this is! Mom admitted that she was having the baby sit on her big sister’s lap instead of putting her in a car seat.
Amy understood the perspective: It’s so hard to hear your baby cry herself sick. It makes it impossible to drive. But she talked to mom about the importance of a car seat and offered advice on how to make the experience better for her baby daughter, including adding a mirror and playing calming music.
Big Consequences
Mom said she would try Amy’s suggestions, and later texted Amy a picture of the baby in her car seat. Amy noted that it was installed incorrectly, facing forward and with the straps too loose. She gave her some advice and encouraged mom to go to a fire department where they could have the baby checked in the seat.
Not a month after that conversation, the family was in a car accident. They got rear ended. And mom’s first thought was, “Amy saved me from what could have happened.”
It’s hard to imagine what could have been. But since the baby was facing backwards and the straps were correctly secured, both mom and baby were safe. Mom says that her baby will never not ride in a car seat again, and she’s grateful for Amy’s persistence and kindness on the issue.
Beyond Basic Needs
Our staff help parents in big and little ways. While we help provide for the family’s specific needs, as in-home provider we understand and preemptively support families far beyond our services. Sometimes it’s those things that families remember for years to come, whether it’s a gift card at just the right time, getting kids the right adaptive equipment, or easing the stress of holiday gifts.
If you or someone you know could use support in parenting, check out our services—it could be lifesaving!
